1. Nek Chand, a PWDÂ official in Chandigarh, began to clear a little patch of jungle in the early 1960s to make a small garden area.
2. He set stones around the little clearing and before long had sculpted a few figures recycled from materials he found at hand.Â
3. Nek Chand worked at night after his normal working day in total secrecy for fear of being discovered by the authorities
4. Though the park came up in an illegal manner, it wasn’t demolished. Nek Chand was put on a salary and given a workforce of 50 labourers.
5. Nek Chand’s creation combines huge buildings with a series of interlinking waterfalls across 25 acres of several thousand sculptures set in courtyard style.
6. Rock Garden receives over 5,000 visitors each day, some 12 million people so far.
7. Regarded as one of the greatest artistic achievements in India since Taj Mahal.
