Shimla, June 7: A large number of tourists, who have thronged Shimla and the adjoining areas to beat the scorching heat, and locals had a relief as showers, accompanied by light hail, lashed the capital town Tuesday evening.
Shimla and Una experienced the hottest day of the season on June 3 but the mercury dropped by four to five degrees after the squall. The sky remained heavily overcast and strong winds lashed the region. The visibility was reduced considerably, affecting vehicular traffic.
“We were unhappy as even Shimla was so hot and the purpose of coming to hills was defeated but the drizzle changed everything and we have decided to stay till Sunday,” said Anjana from Ludhiana who had come here with her friends.
“We could not ask for anything more than this wonderful climate, the cool breeze, drizzle and stroll on The Mall,” said Anupam and Shikha, who were on honeymoon.
Banjar and Bhuntar in Kullu district received 41 mm and 21 mm rain while Kotkhai and Seobagh recorded 13 mm and 11 mm rain followed by Bajaura 7 mm and Theog 4 mm. However, the nights were warmer with Una and Palampur recording minimum temperatures at 29.8 degree and 29 degree while Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti district recorded a low of 9.7 degree, Kalpa and Manali 11 degree, Bhuntar 18 degree, Shimla 20.9 degree, Dharamsala 21.4 degree, Bhuntar 21.9 degree, Solan 22.2 degree and Nahan 25.9 degree.
The day temperatures dropped by a few notches and Una was the hottest with a high of 40.6 degree followed by Sundernagar 35.9 degree, Nahan 34.7 degree, Dharamsala 33.8 degree, Solan 33 degree, Shimla 28.3 degree and Kalpa 25.2 degree C .
The local MeT office has warned of squall accompanied by hailstorm in lower and mid hills over the next two days and predicted rain or thundershowers at many places in mid hills over the next six days and rain or snow in higher hills for four days up to June 10.
