Shimla, July 31: The hills of North India, particularly Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have been witnessing good Monsoon rains since July began. Though rains over Jammu and Kashmir remained lesser as compared with the other two hilly states, on and off light traces of rains did not stop from occurring over parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Many parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have witnessed moderate to heavy showers that even triggered incidents of flash floods and landslides in some major hill stations across these hilly states.
In the last 24 hours also, famous tourist’s spots such as Dharamsala, Katra and Nainital had received heavy rains. Within a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Katra recorded hefty rains of 78.8 mm, Dharamsala 67 mm and Nainital witnessed 52.4 mm of rains.
As per Skymet Weather, these weather conditions can be attributed to the northward movement of the axis of the monsoon trough. At present, the axis of Monsoon trough is running via Bareilly and is expected to gradually shift over the foothills of Himalayas. Moreover, a fresh Western Disturbance is also seen over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. This is also likely to bring in heavy rains over the hilly states of North India.
In the wake of these weather systems, the intensity of rains is likely to increase further over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Districts such as Shimla, Kullu, Manali, Mussoorie, and Nainital may brace for heavy showers. Jammu and Kashmir, on the other hand, may also record some light to moderate showers. These rains are expected to continue for the next 2-3 days.
Such heavy rains may trigger alarming situation for some of the famous hills spots against possibilities of landslides and flash floods. Road and highway blockages cannot be ruled out as well. In fact, the chances of cloudbursts cannot be ignored as well.
Hence, people are advised to take extra caution while traveling to the hills at least this week.
