Darang MLA is Kaul Singh Thakur of Indian National Congress. He is the son of late Shri Laxman Singh Thakur. He was born on 23rd November, 1945 at Sambal village, Tehsil Sadar, Distt. Mandi. He is BA, LL.B from Panjab University. He is married to Smt. Chinta Thakur.

Constituency Represented

Darang is a village in Bhawarna Tehsil of Kangra District. It is about 28 km from district headquarters Dharamsala and 143 km from Shimla. Darang is surrounded by Panchrukhi, Gopalpur, Nagrota Bagwan and Baijnath tehsils. Dharamsala, Hamirpur, Mandi, Sundernagar are the nearby cities. Darang lies on the border of Kangra and Hamirpur districts.

Political Standing

Kaul Singh Thakur started his political career as a member of the Panchayat Samiti, Mandi Sadar. He was elected its chairman in 1973 and remained at the post till 1977. He got elected to the State Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1977. Kaul Singh also remained Deputy Chairman, State Planning Board (Cabinet rank), 1983. Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Parliamentary Affairs & Law (Independent Charge), 1985-90; Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, 1993-98; and Minister for Irrigation & Public Health, Law & Justice, Urban Development & Parliamentary Affairs, March 6, 2003 to December, 2007.

As the Speaker, he participated in various Annual All India Presiding Officers’ as well as CPA Conferences. Kaul Singh joined Congress for Democracy and Janata Party before being associated with Congress (I) in 1979; remained Chairman, Pradesh Congress Committee’ Legal Cell; General Secretary; Congress; Legislative Party’ and (ii) State Congress Committee (twice). Elected to Legislative Assembly in 1977; re-elected to the Assembly in 1982, 1985, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2007 and 2012 on Congress ticket.

The present election of Karan Singh is the 8th and he happens to be the senior most legislature of the Vidhan Sabha and made President Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee on 7 July 2008 again reelected as president of HPCC on 26 October 2010.  He was elected as MLA from this Vidhan Sabha seat in the elections held in 2012. He won by a margin of 2232 votes. Jawahar Lal of Bharatiya Janata Party was the trailing candidate.
