Yes, you heard us right. The life term convicts, aka, men who will never walk free again, top the list of prospective grooms in Bihar.
For a state that is stricken with poverty, they have substantial value in the groom market. By now you must be thinking that have we gone nuts. But hear us out.
These convicts operate under a government scheme called day out and night in. By which they earn their livelihood in the day and return to the jail in the evening.
This practice is being offered in a jail in Buxar, South Bihar and in 53 jails across India.
The convicts get a chance to earn Rs 400 to 800 per day, depending on their skill set, which is a good amount for a family.
You will be surprised to know that five such convicts who might be serving a sentence for murder or dacoity, have had arranged marriages on the premises and are now living normal family lives in housing units provided by the government.
Most of the women who marry these convicts hail from very poor backgrounds and are just looking for a decent living, without much aspirations. This is a noble initiative undertaken by the jail authorities, in providing a chance for a normal life to convicts serving life sentences.
But only time will tell, if this initiative was successful or not?
