Shimla, May 29: Barely 24 hours after three Congress-supported councillors lent support to a no-confidence motion moved by seven BJP-supported councillors against the president of the local Municipal Committee, Congress councillor Krishna Devi on Sunday joined the BJP.
The strength of those who were supporting the no-confidence motion had now been reduced to nine. Krishna Devi’s husband Rup Chand, a former three-time councillor, also announced his decision to join the BJP On Sunday before the media.
He alleged that the Congress was only elevating people from a particular caste on key posts despite such people having no mass base and despite raising this issue within the party it had yielded no result.
Pawan Gupta, president, MC, Solan, asserted that he still enjoyed the majority support and said a section of the BJP councillors had certain issues which could be sorted out amicably. He criticised the Congress for fishing in troubled waters and claimed that the no-confidence motion would fail to materialise as the BJP councillors had been led astray by the Congress.
He said the Congress was baffled by the plethora of development works undertaken by the MC under his leadership and this step would cost them dear in the ensuing Vidhan Sabha polls. Gupta while elaborating on the development works undertaken in the MC in the last one year said works worth Rs 10 crore had been executed in the last 15 months. While the move to poach councillors from the opposing party was not new to Solan whenever a no-confidence motion was moved, it remains to be seen how the dissidents will manage to keep their flock together, especially when fissures had appeared right at the outset.
