Shimla, Aug 11: In a measure aimed at inculcating more discipline amongst the teaching fraternity, the government higher education department has issued directions to all the schools to ensure that educators dress up formally at the workplace.
The notification directs school managements to strictly implement the dress code for teachers in the class failing which they would be issued notices. “We have directed flying squads to carry out random checks in schools,” Director, Higher Education , BL Binta.
“It has been observed that teachers dress up casually during school hours, which does not leave a good impression on the children,” said Binta, adding that the government plans to introduce uniforms for teachers, particularly in schools affiliated to Himachal Pradesh School Board of Education.
Last year, the department had banned the use of mobile phones in schools, and phones of students found using them in school hours were confiscated.
The education department’s orders come in wake of fresh directions issued by Chief Secretary V.C Pharklha.
Soon after the HP high court reprimanded a junior engineer for dressing up casually for a court hearing , the department of personnel had issued an order asking all officers to ensure that the employees are dressed ‘modestly’ during the office hours. The advisory also warned of strict action against the defaulters.
The orders had not gone down well with the lower rung officials of the Himachal Pradesh secretariat, and the employees union had demanded a dress code instead of a ban on casual dressing.
