BJP-Congress locked in social media war ahead of Himachal Pradesh assembly elections

Shimla, Oct 10: The election commission is yet to announce the dates for the state assembly election, but the social media war between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress has already started.

Just before Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s Mandi rally on Saturday, the BJP supporters started a hashtag ‘PappuPanoti’ on Twitter, targeting the alleged failures of Congress government in the state.

Both the parties are also putting up videos on social media to target each other in the poll bound state. While the BJP highlights the state government’s failures on social media, Congress has upped its ante against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and demonetisation.

BJP’s state IT cell convener Ravi Rana said, “We are highlighting failures of state government and achievements of Modi government.”

The two parties are also engaged in a campaigning war, with BJP running a social media campaign, ‘Hisaab Maange Himachal’. To its response, Congress has recently initiated a counter campaign ‘Jawab Dega Himachal’.

“We have started ‘Jawab Dega Himachal’ campaign,” said the Congress state IT cell head Rajender Sharma.

He said the party has an army of volunteers who spread the message through social media platforms.

“Entire work regarding photos, videos and graphics is done by the party’s volunteers,” said Sharma, adding, “We are in touch with professionals and if required, we will take their services.”

BJP’s state general secretary, Pavan Rana, who also manages its campaign in the state, said “Team of experts have come from New Delhi who design different posts, videos for Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and other social media platforms.”
